EVAPORATORS
Evaporators are widely used in various industries to concentrate liquids by removing water or solvents through controlled evaporation. The applications and capacity depend on the industry, product characteristics, and operating conditions.
Applications of Evaporators
Food and Beverage Industry
- Juice Concentration: Used to concentrate fruit juices (e.g., orange, apple, and pineapple juice) by removing excess water while preserving flavor and nutrients.
- Dairy Processing: Concentrates milk, whey, and lactose solutions before drying (e.g., in milk powder production).
- Sugar Industry: Evaporators concentrate sugar syrup in sugar mills and refineries.
- Brewery & Distillation: Used for beer wort concentration and alcohol distillation.
Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industry
- Pharmaceuticals: Evaporators are used in drug manufacturing, where solvents need to be removed without degrading active ingredients.
- Chemical Processing: Used to concentrate solutions like caustic soda, acids, and resins.
- Wastewater Treatment: Reduces liquid waste volume and recovers useful components from industrial wastewater.
Pulp and Paper Industry
- Concentrates black liquor in paper mills before incineration in recovery boilers.
Desalination Plants
- Multi-effect evaporators (MEE) or mechanical vapor recompression (MVR) systems are used for seawater desalination to produce fresh water.
Capacities of Evaporators
Evaporator capacity is measured in terms of evaporation rate, typically in kg/hr or tons per hour (TPH) of water removed. The capacity depends on the type of evaporator, heating system, and feed composition.
Small-Scale Evaporators
- Lab-Scale & Pilot Plants: 1–50 kg/hr
- Small Juice/Dairy Plants: 500–5,000 kg/hr
Medium-Scale Evaporators
- Food and Beverage Production: 5–50 TPH
- Sugar and Dairy Plants: 20–100 TPH
Large-Scale Industrial Evaporators
- Chemical & Pulp Industry: 100–500+ TPH
- Desalination Plants: 1,000+ TPH
Types of Evaporators Used in Juice and Dairy Processing
- Falling Film Evaporators: High efficiency, commonly used in juice and dairy industries.
- Forced Circulation Evaporators: Used for highly viscous liquids.
- Multi-Effect Evaporators (MEE): Energy-efficient, used in large-scale juice and dairy processing.
- Mechanical Vapor Recompression (MVR) Evaporators: Energy-saving solution for high-volume applications.
